Well, the weekend has passed us by and we begin a new week with a little more energy than we felt Friday afternoon. My weekend was spent golfing as I prepare for the Canadian mid-amateur golf championship next week just outside of London, Ontario. This will be my first national level golf tournament and I am looking forward to learning how my mind and body will respond to an advanced level of competition. Goals are set, practice has taken place and only fine tuning is now required.
Years ago I had written an article about the relationship between golf and internal communications. In each we have to consider the environment and its ever changing face; we need to think about outcomes and goals, strategies to employ to help us reach the goals we have set and in each we have many tools at our disposal to help us. In golf the tools include our clubs, balls, caddy and friends who offer support. Our experience helps us determine which club to employ at any given time - and when to modify how we use it over standard or normal practice.
In the world of communications the array of tools we can call upon is large and diverse as well - and each we have learned to adapt to a use somewhat different than originally intended.
It is an interesting parallel that can be extended for some time as part of a discussion - but the important thing for us to understand is that in business as in golf, having a vision of where we wish to go and what we would like to achieve along the way is second only in importance to monitoring our performance along the way and adjusting as the world around us changes constantly.
